Open House Ministries on the Westside of Vancouver is a family shelter that was incorporated in 1986. They offer more than just shelter for the homeless, they also provide safety and hope to families in need. Their vision is “a community where God’s love and grace has restored lives and ended homelessness.”
Guiding principle:
“Open House Ministries is committed to equipping homeless families with tools necessary for resolving issues that lead to poverty and homelessness. We dedicate ourselves to helping homeless families restore healthy relationships with each other, their community and Christ.”
The Future:
A project that is in the works is their Project Cornerstone to build Open House Ministries West. This will be a new affordable housing option with 30 apartments (Studio – 3 bedroom options), that will include washer & dryers and basement storage units. The tenants will transition to OHM West from the shelter and have an affordable rent that will help build rental history for their future. They will still have access to and support from Open House Ministries’ main campus and have a case manager check in with the family’s progress.
Ways they Help:
Besides providing homeless families shelter, they also provide access to educational programs based around learning life skills, a case manager and vocational training in Open House Ministries’ Secondhand Solutions Thrift Store & Wheel Deals Bicycle Shop.
Ways You Can Help:
There are several ways to help Open House Ministries; from donating food & hygiene products to the pantry, clothing & household items to the shelter, furniture to their thrift store, adopting a room (providing essentials for everyday living for an incoming family), financially or simply, just volunteering your time.
