They are on a mission to ensure that members of their community have access to hot showers, clean laundry, a safe day space, and opportunities to engage in the craft of woodworking.

What They Do:

Friends of the Carpenter empowers socially excluded individuals through holistic support and woodworking.

They provide essential services like free showers, laundry, respite, and coffee, fostering dignity and connection in a safe space. Beyond immediate needs, they promote long-term well-being by addressing physical, social, spiritual, and economic challenges.

Their initiatives include daily spiritual practices, social connection opportunities, and woodworking in a fully equipped woodshop, offering purpose and potential economic pathways.

Where They Came From

Friends of the Carpenter began with a simple vision: to create a space where people experiencing hardship could find connection, support, and purpose. Rev. Duane Sich, with the support of First Presbyterian Church, used his sabbatical to lay the groundwork for this mission, starting with a small office in his home and a woodshop in his garage.

In 2004, a transformative gift from Jack and Jane Artz allowed the organization to establish a permanent 18,000 sq. ft. facility, which officially opened on May 2nd. This space continues to be a hub where woodworking and holistic support empower individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
